Old Damascus Heritage
(defined by UNESCO):
Khan Alrez and Souk Albzorieh
Abstract
The project would consist to expulse traders and inhabitants of this very nice trade region (spices, sweets, etc.) of Old Damascus
and destroying to develop industrial tourism projects.
Under the pretext that the buildings are in poor and dangerous statements, they would like to evacuate,
to leave indigenous people of a zone of the most important traditional Old Damascus to invest in tourism projects industry.
Rehabilitation or Cleaning?
For 3 years, the tourism department has begun to expropriate the occupants of this region and to auction their property.
But this is not in the legal texts of Republic! Now they want to evict people in 10 days during the holiday of Eid,
when people are quiet in the family, and where traders work most. Under the pretext of dangerous buildings, we want to demolish,
while engineers say these buildings aren't in bad condition. They can neither make hospitals, or public gardens, or highway in this zone,
then why the government wants to take the property of Damascene people?
...To transform for instance, the Khan in hotel five stars with swiming pool and parking; this transformation needs to break the Old City of Damascus, that is a part of the World Heritage.
If this project goes to destroy the world heritage, material
and social, the last remainders of active life in the historical Damascus, it is a real disaster for Humanity.
